Meet Our People

John Marshall, CBEC, AIF

Founding Partner

Mr. John Marshall is a founding partner of The Resource Group. Over the past 23 years, John has worked with families and their advisors, designing and implementing plans to transition, grow and protect assets in excess of $1 billion. John is a Certified Business Exit Consultant (CBEC®) as well as an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®).

In addition to professional experience, John has personal experiences that inform his unique planning approach. Raised in a family that owned private businesses, John has lived through the financial and emotional aspects of selling a family business, and transitioning a family business to the next generation. Additionally, within his family, John has experienced the impact of long term care and planning issues related to stroke, terminal illness, and the unexpected passing of a young family member. These personal experiences drive John to work with a sense of urgency and purpose.

Most often, strategies are created to address risks and uncover opportunities for family business owners, real estate owners, and owners of publicly traded securities.

Utilizing a cross-disciplinary approach (including legal, accounting, insurance and investment strategies), coordination gaps and planning opportunities emerge, often amounting to significant income, capital gain and estate tax savings. As a Certified Business Exit Consultant (CBEC®), John works within a proven process to help business owners understand their exit options, whether they desire to transition their business to family, management, a competitor or a financial buyer.

As a result of his achievements, The Resource Group has partnered with Lincoln Financial Group, a 100 year old diversified financial services organization with over $253 billion under management* and the third largest insurance carrier in the world. This alliance has allowed for a pooling of vast intellectual resources and many years of comprehensive financial planning experience.

John speaks nationally and has been a certified continuing education instructor under Lincoln’s providership in all 50 states, always learning and adding new skills and ideas on his client’s behalf. He has appeared on CNBC television, and has been quoted in Business Week and Financial Times.

An All-American water polo player in college and accomplished athlete, John integrates the principles of teamwork and endurance in executing strategy. He is also dedicated to working on behalf of different charities and volunteers at his church. A lifetime California resident, Mr. Marshall lives in Glendale with his wife Kari and their three daughters.

David Ward, CFA

Financial Planner

As a seasoned portfolio manager, David has managed equity and fixed income portfolios for high net worth families, senior executives, non-profits and foundations and retirement plans for large and small companies for nearly 25 years. His client portfolios have ranged between $500,000 to over $400 million. His strategies include individual stocks and bonds along with commingled vehicles and separately managed portfolios. He has also worked as a portfolio manager for Northern Trust, Smith Barney and as an institutional investment manager for The Capital Group.

His investment philosophy includes two basic beliefs – don’t overpay for anything and minimize the chance and impact of losses. Capital markets are very competitive and opportunity to yield excess returns will always be challenging. The impact of taxes, losses and excessive transactions will erode the benefits of a disciplined investment strategy.

David has also been committed to the development of his profession. He is a Past President and board member of the CFA Society of Los Angeles (CFALA). His volunteer work for the organization has included teaching Portfolio Management for the CFA Review Program jointly sponsored by CFALA and USC.
As an active member of his community, he has been a past board member for Crescenta Cañada YMCA, Urban Education Partnership, California Dollars for Scholars and Crescenta Valley Little League, Crescenta Valley United Softball and Boy Scouts of America.

David is a local product of Burbank High School. He earned his B.A. from Pomona College, his M.B.A. in Finance and Accounting from Cornell University and is a CFA Charterholder.

Away from the office, David lives in La Crescenta with his three busy kids and his fiancé, Lynnette.
